A message from Kurt Nevin, IMM global operations for Boeing:
Back in 1996, one of the Boeing packaging engineers told me of Viking Packing. He said it would help our program, since we have a requirement to have our components pre-packaged and ready to ship on the shelf.
We’ve ordered thousands of cases from Viking now. They’re always shipped in a timely manner, and they’ve always been able to help if we had cases that needed adjustment or repair. That hasn’t happened too often. In two occurrences, we had containers damaged. We sent them back and they fixed them for free.
Viking was the first company I used, never really had a desire to go anywhere else. Some of our buyers wanted to have other bids on it for our containers, but I’ve always been successful in having them stick with Viking because of the service and quick turn-arounds for immediate orders we get.
When we were first setting up the program, I sat down with Viking and gave them part numbers and explained what we were looking for. They helped us figure out what containers we needed. They custom designed packaging so we didn’t have to use our engineering to do it.
With the knowledge of what we were doing and parts that we had, they knew how to assist with those parts and the shipping containers. We were able to come up with our requirements rather quickly, rather than engage our engineering which would’ve taken much longer, and taken Boeing resources away from other things they could be doing.
The people there are very personable, and fun to work with. They have very positive attitudes and they’re just basically good people.
The biggest savings they’ve enabled for our program is that we don’t have to use our own engineering for our packaging. Viking is our engineering. I can call them up, and in a five-minute conversation, we can figure out what kind of box we need. Viking will make it, and, on receipt of PO, they’ll get it out to me in a week or two.
That’s probably the biggest savings we have. We can figure out what box I need and the makeup of that box to fit the requirements in a 5-10 minute phone call rather than going to engineering and having them research for hours and hours. This cuts down time, and cuts down money, and we’ve always gotten the result that I wanted working with Viking.
Viking has always been a pleasure to work with. I know I’m going to get the results I need every time I work on a project or requirement with them. It basically puts our packaging concerns to rest.
